Shapes & Creative Construction
We are continuing to notice shapes and their attributes all around our classroom. The children are discovering how shapes can be combined to create new ones, such as joining triangles to make diamonds, trapezoids, or squares, and putting rectangles together to form squares. Our Magna-Tiles are especially popular right now, with squares being a hot commodity! As children experiment with triangles and rectangles to build their structures, they are developing spatial awareness, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of how shapes fit together. They are also exercising their creativity by experimenting with different possibilities, adapting their ideas, and discovering new ways to bring their designs to life.
Bringing Stories! to Life
One of our favorite stories, Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds, has inspired some wonderfully creative construction! In the story, Jasper Rabbit builds an elaborate fence to keep the creepy carrots contained. We have introduced little carrots with faces and battery-operated tea lights that glow through our translucent Magna-Tiles to create an glowing effect. The children are experimenting with all sorts of ways to build around the carrots, designing walls, enclosures, and imaginative structures to keep them contained. As they build, test, and redesign their creations, they are developing engineering skills, flexible thinking, and the confidence to turn their own ideas into reality. It has been exciting to see how each child approaches the challenge in their own unique way!
